In January, we ended up spending $331 for groceries, including water and alcohol. This is better than our $400 average but we need to keep watching our budget in the coming months to ensure that we don’t just increase our spending to ‘make up’ for the lower total. We have plenty of food in the pantry and a delicious baked cauliflower torta that will last through the weekend.
Overall the experiment wasn’t that painful. We became more mindful of our spending choices. At the same time, I don’t think we’ll start creating menu plans based solely on what’s on sale at Ralphs or Vons. Nor will we compromise on quality of ingredients. In other words, imported parmigiano reggiano will always have a place in our home!
